Mobility Matters after 45+

Couple running - keep moving!
Couple running - keep moving!

If you’ve ever noticed your body feeling a little stiffer when you get out of bed in the morning, you’re not alone…just because I'm a Pilates teacher doesn't mean I never have any aches and pains myself, but I know how effective movement is to smooth away those aches so I can concentrate on my day.

We know that mobility naturally declines as we get older. In fact, after age 30, people begin to lose muscle mass and strength, a process that accelerates with age. Muscle fibres decrease in number and size, and muscle tissue is often replaced by fibrous tissue.

There are joint changes too. Cartilage, which cushions joints, thins and becomes less flexible. The production of synovial fluid which you find between your joints, decreases, and ligaments can shorten and stiffen, leading to reduced flexibility and increased stiffness.

Bones lose density and minerals as people age, particularly after menopause. This weakening can lead to instability and an increased risk of fractures, affecting balance.

But enough of all the science! The purpose of this blog is to tell you that Pilates is a powerful way to maintain freedom of movement. We know that every time we move a joint that synovial fluid is created, it's the bodies own 'oiling system'. Pilates focuses a lot on strict technique and part of the reason is that we know by moving the joints in the right alignment, with load that you can cope with, that the right muscles will develop around that joint, making it even more efficient and effective. That's why it's so important to find a Pilates teacher that will watch you like a hawk and correct you.

When you've nailed the technique you can then focus on strength building, which means loading that joint / bone, which in turn will help to build bone density.

Mobility isn’t about touching your toes — it’s about enjoying life fully. If you’d like to experience how Pilates can help, come and join one of our classes in Dulwich SE21.
