I'm doing Pilates once a week, why do I still have a sore neck/shoulder?

So you've been going to Pilates once a week. You've even done a few of the movements that I've suggested on Instagram during the week. Why is your neck or shoulder area still sore?

The most likely reason is that there is something that you're habitually doing which is aggravating the condition.

Pilates is about body awareness as much as about a fitness regime. It should help you to start recognising how your body feels and when you're holding tension. You need to start taking that mindful 1 hour practice in class, into your every day.

The most common time for building tension in the neck and shoulder area is, of course, at your work desk. However, here are some other common times when we're out of alignment in the neck/shoulder area:

  • When driving

  • When sleeping

  • When looking at our mobile phones

  • When we're prepping, cooking, washing up in the kitchen

When you're doing these things, think about your posture. All these activities involve your neck being flexed or forward. How are you holding yourself? Do you need to change the position of your driving seat, so you're sitting taller and your head is not jutting forward?

Do you sleep on your side or your back? Do you have the right pillow to support your head in good alignment? etc.

Pilates classes are important to improve strength/mobility in joints and to keep your functional movements smooth, but try not to un-do all your good work by allowing your body to be out of alignment the rest of the week. Good luck!
